Morphological Differences between Patient Self-inflicted and Ventilator-induced Lung Injury

The study evaluated the potential harm caused by strong unassisted spontaneous breathing in animals with acute lung injury (ALI). It compared the histopathological findings in animals treated without ventilatory support, injurious mechanical ventilation (MV), and protective MV. The concept of patient-self-inflicted lung injury (P-SILI) is proposed as strenuous spontaneous breathing can also be harmful, similar to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). However, establishing P-SILI as a pathological entity is challenging, and few P-SILI models exist.
