Mortality in Obesity and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Patients Receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Patients with obesity are at increased risk for developing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This study involving 790 ARDS patients on ECMO found that those with obesity had a lower ICU mortality rate (24.1%) than non-obese patients (35.3%). This challenges the conventional view of obesity as a contraindication for ECMO support, suggesting it may be beneficial in this context.
