MRI assessment of cortical maturation in no or mildly affected fetuses with cytomegalovirus infection

The study investigated the pattern of cortical maturation in fetuses with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with mild or no abnormalities on ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (Me) and compared them with healthy controls. The study found that CMV-infected fetuses, even those with mild or no abnormalities on US and MRI, showed delayed cortical maturation compared with healthy fetuses. This suggests that congenital CMV infection could be associated with altered brain cortical structure, even in fetuses that are typically considered of good prognosis.
