A recent retrospective cohort analysis examined chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients to assess the prevalence and impact of the muscle loss phenotype (MLP). In this study of 55,782 COPD patients, 53.4% exhibited MLP, predominantly identified by low appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) and handgrip strength (HGS). Over a median follow-up of 70.1 months, 5,608 deaths occurred, with 907 being COPD-related. After adjusting for multiple factors, MLP was linked to a 30% increased risk of all-cause mortality and a 70% increased risk of COPD-related mortality.
