
This study investigated the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans bacteria to collagen in the presence of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). The study used atomic force microscopy to examine the dynamics of bacterial attachment to collagen treated with methylglyoxal-derived AGEs. They found that AGE modification increased the number and strength of bacterial attachment events, suggesting that collagen alterations due to aging and glycation may contribute to bacterial adherence to oral tissues. These findings have implications for conditions such as aging and chronic hyperglycemia.
