A study investigated the potential of nasal administration of live attenuated Streptococcus pneumoniae strains in preventing infections. The controlled human infection model revealed that colonization with genetically modified strains conferred protection against recolonization with wild-type strains. Participants exposed to the modified strains exhibited similar colonization rates initially but showed varying levels of protection upon challenge with the wild-type strain. The study highlights the safety and efficacy of nasal administration of live attenuated S. pneumoniae as a potential preventive strategy against pneumococcal infections.
