
A recent study analyzed the impact of neighborhood-level disadvantage on delays in receiving postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) among patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The research, involving 681 patients, revealed that 60.8% experienced PORT delays, with a median delay of 46 days. Neighborhood disadvantage, as measured by the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), significantly influenced these delays. Each 25-point increase in ADI score was associated with a 32% higher likelihood of PORT delay. Moreover, increasing ADI quartiles correlated with longer delays in initiating PORT. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted strategies to ensure equitable access to timely, guideline-adherent PORT for HNSCC patients across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
