New Chickenpox Virus Variant Detected In India, Know All About 'Clade 9'

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in India has identified a novel Chickenpox variant, named Clade 9, through a study on monkeypox. This variant of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox in children and shingles in adults. Clade 9, previously unseen in India, was reported in the 'Annals of Medicine' on September 6. VZV, belonging to the herpesvirus family, spreads via respiratory secretions and poses more significant risks in adults, including fatalities. Symptoms include an itchy rash, fever, and potential complications like pneumonia and encephalitis. Vaccination and hygiene practices are recommended preventive measures.
