New drug discovered to slow down vision and retina damage in diabetics - Longevity.Technology

Scientists at the Wilmer Eye Institute, John Hopkins Medicine, have discovered an experimental drug that shows promise in preventing or slowing down vision loss in patients with diabetes. The drug, called 32-134D, reduces the levels of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), which is responsible for the growth of abnormal blood vessels in diabetic retinal vascular diseases. Unlike current treatments, 32-134D was found to be well-tolerated and safer, with the potential to be a better alternative. In mouse models and human retinal cells, the drug effectively reduced HIF levels, prevented the formation of new blood vessels, and slowed disease progression.
