The study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel enzyme formulation, Tartarase, in reducing calculus deposits over 4 weeks using the Volpe-Manhold Index on lingual surfaces of six lower anterior teeth. Forty subjects were randomized, with 20 using Crest as a control and 20 using Tartarase. The Tartarase group experienced a 40% reduction in calculus, while the Crest group saw a 12% increase. This proof-of-principle study suggests Tartarase effectively combats calculus accumulation with standard oral hygiene practices.
