Researchers have developed and validated KidneyIntelX.dkd, an updated test, for stratifying diabetic kidney disease (DKD) patients' risk of progression from stages 1 to 3. In a study involving 573 DKD participants, 15.4% experienced progression to PDKF over a median of 3.7 years. A random forest model was trained using biomarkers and clinical variables. In separate cohorts of 657 BioMe participants and 1197 CANVAS participants, 11.7% and 7.5%, respectively, experienced PDKF. The test classified participants into low-, moderate-, and high-risk levels, with significant hazard ratios after adjusting for clinical risk factors. This development supports FDA regulatory approval for clinical adoption.
