Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects over 10% of adults globally, with fibrosis being a major cause of kidney failure. Despite efforts to inhibit TGFβ signaling to prevent fibrosis, clinical outcomes have been disappointing. While antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs can slow kidney function decline, their effects on fibrosis remain unclear. New drugs targeting pro-fibrotic signaling, cell repair, and nanotechnologies for kidney-specific drug delivery offer hope for improved treatments.
