Researchers have identified cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) as a key driver of abnormal collagen I accumulation in oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). COMP works with collagen XIV to mediate fibrosis progression. Knockdown of COMP reduced arecoline-induced collagen deposition, offering a potential therapeutic target. This discovery paves the way for new OSF treatments.
