New Trial to Assess SHAPES Electrical Stimulation for Post-Stroke Spasticity

The randomized controlled trial investigates the efficacy of Sheffield Adaptive Patterned Electrical Stimulation (SHAPES) compared to transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) and standard care for reducing post-stroke elbow spasticity (PSES). A total of 297 participants with PSES will be allocated to one of three groups: SHAPES, TENS, or standard care (no electrical stimulation). SHAPES and TENS utilize a specialized electrical stimulation sleeve for daily use over six weeks. Efficacy is an 18% improvement in the 7-day Numerical Rating Scale (NRS-S) for PSES, evaluated at multiple time points up to 24 weeks post-treatment. Secondary outcomes include motor function and quality of life measures, with an economic evaluation conducted in parallel.
