Next-Generation Techniques Help Improve Kidney Function After Surgery

The study aimed to assess factors affecting functional recovery after partial nephrectomy (PN) using improved tools for analysis. 670 out of 1140 patients were included in the study. Functional recovery after PN correlated strongly with parenchymal volume preservation. Secondary factors such as comorbidities, increased tumour complexity, and ischaemia-related factors were also found to be independently associated with impaired recovery, but were much less impactful. Ischaemia time, tumour complexity, and preoperative global GFR were identified as independent predictors of Spectrum Score, while insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, refractory hypertension, warm ischaemia, and Spectrum Score were identified as independent predictors of recovery from ischaemia.
