Nipah Virus Alert 2024: First Fatality in Bangladesh | Symptoms, Prevention, and Health Advisory

Bangladesh reported its first Nipah virus fatality in 2024, as a man died in Manikganj, 50 km from Dhaka, after consuming raw date juice. The virus, transmitted through contact with infected bats, pigs, or humans, was first identified in 1999 and has caused outbreaks in Bangladesh, India, and Singapore, claiming over 160 lives in Bangladesh alone. The health ministry warns against consuming fruits exposed to birds or bats and raw date juice. With no treatments or vaccines, Nipah virus symptoms include fever, headache, cough, and high fatality rates, ranging from 40% to 75%, as per the World Health Organization.
