
The study investigates the utility of 2D shear wave elastography in assessing the cause of new-onset ascites. Conducted on 52 patients, it found a liver stiffness measurement cut-off of 14.4 kPa to be 94% accurate in distinguishing ascites types. The method showed 100% sensitivity and 83% specificity when ascites had a serum ascites albumin gradient ≥11 g/L. With an 84% success rate, the findings suggest 2D shear wave elastography's potential in discerning transudative from exudative ascites, particularly in patients with portal hypertension and peritoneal carcinomatosis.
