Noradrenergic Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease: Insights from Animal Models to Clinical Application

Noradrenergic Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease: Insights from Animal Models to Clinical Application

The review discussed how research on motor symptoms and phenotypes of Parkinson's disease (PD) has led to the recognition of distinct non-motor endophenotypes of PD, which are further strengthened by the non-motor symptoms present in prodromal PD. One of these endophenotypes is the noradrenergic subtype of PD, which is characterized by early dysfunction of noradrenergic transmission and specific non-motor symptoms, such as rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, pain, anxiety, and dysautonomia. The review highlights how recognizing noradrenergic PD as a distinct early disease subtype could lead to personalized medicine for patients with PD.
