Obstetric and perinatal outcome in short‐stature patients

A study examined the obstetric and perinatal outcomes of women with short stature. The study included 356,356 parturient, of whom 14,035 (3.9%) were short-stature patients. The results showed that short-stature patients had higher rates of cesarean delivery, induction of labor, pathologic presentations, the prolonged second stage of labor, non-reassuring fetal monitoring, and meconium-stained amniotic fluid. Newborns of short-stature patients had a higher risk of being small for gestational age. After adjusting for confounders, short stature remained a significant risk factor for cesarean delivery and small for gestational-age newborns. However, it was not associated with other adverse outcomes. In conclusion, maternal short stature independently increases the risk of cesarean delivery and is linked to small for gestational age newborns.
