Obstructive Sleep Apnea Linked to Elevated Endothelin-1 in Pregnancy

The study examined the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and endothelin-1 levels in pregnant women with obesity. Among 60 participants, OSA was associated with a sixfold increase in plasma endothelin-1 levels above the 90th percentile, even after adjusting for body mass index (BMI). The study found that a lower pre-pregnancy BMI was linked to higher endothelin-1 plasma levels, while severe obesity appeared protective. These findings suggest that OSA may elevate endothelin-1 levels in pregnancy, potentially complicating risk assessments based on BMI.
