Octenidine Hydrochloride vs. Chlorhexidine - Which Is the Better Adjunct in Periodontitis?

A clinical trial compared the effectiveness of octenidine hydrochloride and chlorhexidine mouthwashes in treating mild-to-moderate periodontitis. Patients used the mouthwash twice daily for three weeks after dental procedures. Results showed both octenidine and chlorhexidine groups had significantly reduced gingival inflammation compared to placebo, with octenidine causing less staining. Patient preference also leaned towards octenidine. The study suggests octenidine as a viable alternative to chlorhexidine in managing periodontal health in stage I–II periodontitis patients.
