Olfactory cleft mucus eosinophil‐derived neurotoxin better reflects olfactory loss than blood eosinophil counts in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis

This study analyzed eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) levels in the olfactory cleft mucus and olfactory mucosa and their association with olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The researchers collected samples from 150 CRS patients undergoing surgery and 25 healthy controls. They found that CRS patients with olfactory dysfunction had higher levels of EDN in the olfactory mucosa and cleft mucus than CRS patients without olfactory dysfunction. The EDN levels in the mucus were correlated with blood eosinophils, CT scores, and olfactory endoscopy scale in CRS. After adjusting for demographics and comorbidities, mucus EDN levels were significantly associated with olfactory dysfunction. The study suggests that olfactory cleft mucus EDN levels may better predict olfactory dysfunction in CRS compared to blood eosinophil counts.
