Ondansetron Linked to Higher Cardiac Risk in Hemodialysis Patients

A study examined the cardiac safety of ondansetron in individuals undergoing hemodialysis. New users of oral ondansetron were compared to those prescribed antiemetics with lower QT-prolonging potential. Notably, individuals initiating ondansetron faced significantly higher 10-day risks of sudden cardiac death compared to those on alternative antiemetics. The adjusted hazard ratio for this risk was 1.44, with an absolute risk difference of 0.06%. These findings underscore potential cardiac risks associated with ondansetron use in the hemodialysis population.
