The study investigated treatment approaches for locally resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), comparing neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery (NCT+S), neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery (NCRT+S), and surgery followed by chemoradiotherapy (S+CRT). Analyzing 715 patients, post-matching results revealed significant differences in 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), favoring neoadjuvant therapy. However, neoadjuvant therapy correlates with higher postoperative anastomotic leakage rates. The study suggests that neoadjuvant therapy confers a survival advantage for ESCC patients, despite increased postoperative complications, emphasizing the importance of treatment strategy in managing locally advanced ESCC.
