Oral Breathing Improves Endoscopic Operability in Unsedated Procedures

A study involving 252 patients undergoing either ultrathin endoscopy (UE) or conventional endoscopy (CE) compared the effects of oral breathing (OB) and nasal breathing (NB) on endoscopic operability and patient tolerance. The study revealed that OB significantly enhanced visibility from the oral cavity to the middle pharynx and improved endoscopic operability, as indicated by lower visual analog scale (VAS) scores in both UE and CE groups. While no significant differences in patient tolerance were observed between OB and NB, UE demonstrated better patient tolerance than CE. Discriminant analysis showed that UE with OB provided superior overall endoscopic operability and patient tolerance compared to other combinations. The findings suggest that UE with OB is the optimal approach for unsedated peroral endoscopy in clinical practice.
