Oral complications in a paediatric graft versus host disease (GVHD) clinic: a retrospective study

The present investigation aimed to evaluate the oral health status of allogeneic transplant recipients seen in a graft-versus-host disease pediatric clinic at the University of California, San Francisco. The retrospective cohort study included 25 patients, 48% of whom were diagnosed with oral chronic GVHD. Other oral complications observed included dry mouth, oral pseudomembranous candidiasis, recrudescent HSV infection, and mammalian target of rapamycin-inhibitor stomatitis. The patients received care from a multi-disciplinary team, including oral medicine specialists who managed their conditions with medications such as topical steroids and anti-fungal agents. The study suggests that including dental specialists in the cancer care team may be beneficial for HSCT recipients with oral complications.
