Oral-only antibiotics for bone and joint infections in children: study protocol for a nationwide randomised open-label non-inferiority trial

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of oral-only treatment for children with bone and joint infections. Currently, these infections are typically treated with intravenous antibiotics followed by oral antibiotics. However, the efficacy of oral-only treatment has not been tested in randomized trials. The study will randomize children aged 3 months to 18 years into two groups: one receiving high-dose oral antibiotics and the other receiving intravenous antibiotics followed by standard oral antibiotics. The primary outcome is a normal clinical assessment six months after treatment. The study has the potential to reduce hospitalization and unnecessary use of intravenous antibiotics in children with these infections.
