Organophosphates in Pregnancy and Effects on Gestation & Fetal Growth (ECHO)

Researchers have discovered concerning links between gestational exposure to organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants and adverse birth outcomes. Analyzing a large dataset, they identified biomarkers, including diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) and dibutyl phosphate/di-isobutyl phosphate (DBUP/DIBP), associated with higher odds of preterm birth. Sex-specific effects were observed, with females more affected by DPHP and bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate. Detectable levels of bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, bis(2-methylphenyl) phosphate, and dipropyl phosphate correlated with higher birth weight-for-gestational-age z-scores. The findings highlight potential risks associated with widespread exposure to OPE flame retardants during pregnancy.
