To reconstruct mandibulectomy defects, few studies have evaluated osseous union and bone resorption in scapula tip-free flaps (STFF). The study aimed to describe the series on STFF concerning osseous union and bone resorption over time. STFFs show high rates of osseous union and limited bone resorption that is equivalent to, or less than, vascularized fibular and iliac crest flaps. Clinically, this translates into both optimal healing and functional and cosmetic outcomes, especially in the setting of prior therapies.

A multicentre US study of 305 older adults undergoing advanced heart failure therapy found that health-related quality of life improved after heart transplantation and long-term mechanical circulatory support. Improvements were generally sustained through 24 months, although patients receiving long-term mechanical support had lower quality-of-life scores over time than those undergoing transplantation without pretransplant support.
