Over 1.4 Million Lives Saved in Europe Due to COVID Vaccines, WHO Reports

In Copenhagen, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that COVID vaccines have saved over 1.4 million lives in Europe. The WHO European region, spanning 53 countries, has reported 277.7 million COVID-19 cases and 2.2 million deaths as of December 19, 2023. WHO Europe Regional Director Hans Kluge emphasized the importance of vaccination, noting that the first booster doses alone saved an estimated 700,000 lives. Kluge urged ongoing investment in healthcare systems and called for increased funding to address shortages of healthcare workers and essential medication, expressing concern about health slipping from the political agenda.
