The study aimed to examine the association between overweight and obesity and the risk of multimorbidity in the general population. Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies, which found that being overweight and obese are associated with an increased risk of multimorbidity. The study identified 8 studies, which showed that 87.5% of them evidenced a higher risk of multimorbidity among individuals with overweight and/or obesity. The meta-analysis revealed that there is an increased risk of multimorbidity among subjects with overweight and obesity compared to normal weight. However, the study found high heterogeneity in the results, and further research is needed to explore the association in different populations and stratifications by sex, age, and other variables.
