Intellectual disability (ID) is a complex disorder, often of unknown origin. Based on data from Sweden, this study investigated the impact of parental substance use disorders (SUD), including alcohol and drug-related issues, on the risk of ID in offspring. Of the 1,940,820 children studied, those with parents diagnosed with SUD before childbirth had a significantly higher risk of ID. Both maternal and paternal SUD were associated with increased risk, with the greatest risk seen when mothers had alcohol use disorder (AUD) during pregnancy. These findings suggest addressing parental SUD could be a modifiable risk factor in ID prevention and treatment.
