Pars Plana Vitrectomy vs. PPV/Scleral Buckling in Retinal Detachment Repair Outcomes

The study shows that adding scleral buckling (SB) to pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) has minimal effect on anatomical success in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair. 683 patients were analyzed, with no significant difference in single surgical success or final retinal attachment between the PPV/SB and PPV-only groups. However, PPV alone was associated with a significantly greater improvement in visual acuity. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.
