
Lupus nephritis (LN) is a common kidney complication in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, affecting 40-60% of them. Current treatments have limited success rates, with 10-15% of LN patients progressing to kidney failure. Medications used for LN treatment have significant side effects. However, recent advancements in proteomics, flow cytometry, and RNA sequencing have provided new insights into the immune cells and pathways involved in LN development. These findings have identified potential therapeutic targets currently under investigation in animal models and early-stage clinical trials. The hope is that these discoveries will eventually lead to improved care for SLE patients with kidney disease.
