Patterns of alaryngeal voice adoption and predictive factors of vocal rehabilitation failure following total laryngectomy

The study investigated alaryngeal voice acquisition patterns and factors influencing vocal rehabilitation (VR) failure after total laryngectomy (TL) in a Canadian medical center. Among 197 patients, 59% achieved successful VR, with tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) yielding a higher success rate of 70.6% compared to 48.6% with artificial larynx and 18.8% with esophageal voice. A low socioeconomic status was the sole predictor of VR failure, highlighting challenges in adopting alaryngeal voices, potentially worsened by limited TEP usage and socioeconomic barriers.
