Pfizer Inc. has received FDA approval for Penbraya, the first pentavalent vaccine protecting against meningococcal groups A, B, C, W, and Y. This innovative vaccine combines components from two existing vaccines and reduces the total doses needed for full immunization in adolescents and young adults (ages 10-25). Penbraya's approval streamlines the vaccination process, potentially increasing coverage. Meningococcal disease, a severe and potentially fatal illness, can lead to long-term disabilities. Penbraya's approval signifies a significant step in disease prevention. The CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will discuss its use on October 25, 2023. The vaccine is administered in a two-dose series six months apart.
