Phase III Trial: Rebamipide Gargle vs. Benzydamine in Cancer Patients

The Phase III trial evaluated the efficacy of rebamipide gargle compared to benzydamine in 100 head and neck cancer patients undergoing high-dose radiotherapy. Patients were randomized into rebamipide or benzydamine groups. Both gargles showed similar effectiveness in preventing severe oral mucositis (WHO grades 3-4), with rebamipide demonstrating superiority in reducing mucositis severity. Side effects included burning sensation with benzydamine and nausea with rebamipide. Rebamipide presents a promising option for managing radiation-induced oral mucositis in this patient population.
