Phenotypical Characterization of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Premature Infants using Polysomnography

A study involving 207 infants found premature births linked to more significant obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity during infancy, primarily due to frequent partial obstructions (hypopneas). This OSA phenotype also increased sleep fragmentation and intermittent hypoxemia in premature infants. The polysomnographic analysis highlighted significant differences in apnea and arousal indexes between premature and term infants. The findings shed light on the impact of prematurity on pediatric OSA.
