The mechanism responsible for sensing phosphate and the intermediary steps by which phosphate stimulates FGF23 expression in bone is unclear. New findings identify a role for proximal tubule cell (PTC) glycolysis in these processes, acting as both a sensor of phosphate and as a trigger of FGF23 production through the synthesis of glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P).
