Physical Activity as a Lifestyle Modification in Patients With Multiple Comorbidities: Emphasizing More on Obese, Prediabetic, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients - Cureus

Physical activity (PA) has been found to be inversely associated with diabetes incidence, highlighting its importance in preventing the disease. Healthcare practitioners are encouraged to advise high-risk patients, including those with prediabetes, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes PA for weight reduction. Intensive lifestyle interventions focusing on healthier eating habits and increased PA have proven effective in reducing weight and waist circumference, potentially preventing T2DM and associated comorbidities. Combining PA interventions with telemedicine follow-ups results in initial activity changes, but long-term sustainability remains a challenge. The impact of different types of PA on postprandial glucose levels is unclear, and further research is needed. Overall, lifestyle modifications, particularly PA, yield positive outcomes in the early stages, emphasizing the need for long-term studies to better understand the optimal exercise duration and type, as well as the benefits of other lifestyle modifications.
