Placental Biometry Aids Early Prediction of Preeclampsia

The study assessed placental biometry and Doppler parameters in antenatal women to differentiate preeclampsia (PE) from normal outcomes. Among 1008 participants, 44 (4.4%) developed PE, while 600 (59.5%) experienced no adverse consequences. Placental length (PL) and volume (PV) were significantly lower in PE cases (p=0.005). Ratios of PL/uterine artery pulsatility index (Ut A PI) and PV/Ut A PI were consistently lower in PE cases across all trimesters (p<0.001). In the first trimester, PV/Ut A PI demonstrated high predictive accuracy for PE (AUC: 0.801, sensitivity: 81.8%, specificity: 70.5%). Similar sensitivity and specificity were observed for PL/Ut A PI at 11–14 weeks, declining slightly by 28–32 weeks. These findings suggest placental parameters and related Doppler ratios are valuable markers for early PE prediction and monitoring.
