Polypharmacy and pattern of medication use among patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease

A study in southwestern Iran involving 9,262 participants from the Pars Cohort investigated Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) patients. Findings revealed a 9.5% polypharmacy prevalence in male and 19.3% in female GERD patients. GERD correlated with a higher polypharmacy prevalence, especially in females, those with multimorbidities, and metabolic syndrome. Acid-related disorder drugs were most commonly used, and 13.9%, 4.2%, and 1.1% of GERD patients had type C, D, and X drug interactions, respectively. The study emphasizes reviewing medication lists for potential interactions and addressing medications that may worsen GERD.
