Postoperative bowel function in children operated for Hirschsprung’s disease in a low-income setting

This study assessed postoperative bowel function in 120 children who underwent surgery for Hirschsprung’s disease, a common cause of intestinal obstruction in newborns. The majority of the children were male (80.8%), and most (77.5%) had the classic type of Hirschsprung’s. The two-stage endorectal pullthrough procedure was common, with excellent or good bowel continence in 89% of the cases. The study found that factors such as age, gender, and type of procedure did not significantly influence outcomes, though longer follow-up is needed for more definitive conclusions.
