PPI Alters Saliva Microbiota in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Patients

A self-controlled study involving 32 patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) examined the effect of an 8-week esomeprazole regimen on saliva microbiota composition. Significant changes in both alpha diversity (P=0.038) and beta diversity (P<0.010) were observed following PPI therapy, as analyzed via 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. PPI use increased the abundance of Campylobacter species, including Campylobacter gracilis, while reducing Lactobacillus (P<0.050). Functional analysis indicated an increase in genes related to indole alkaloid biosynthesis post-PPI treatment. The findings suggest that PPI administration induces notable alterations in the salivary microbiota of LPR patients, highlighting potential microbial shifts associated with prolonged PPI usage.
