Prenatal Opioid Exposure and Risk for Adverse Brain and Motor Outcomes in Infants Born Premature

This study compares brain MRI biomarkers and neurodevelopmental test scores in preterm infants with and without prenatal opioid exposure (POE). The study analyzed data from 395 infants born at or before 32 weeks of gestational age and revealed a significant association between POE and severe punctate white matter lesions (PWML). Even after adjusting for confounders, the link between POE and PWML remains, suggesting a direct adverse impact of opioids on white matter. Additionally, infants with POE exhibit poorer motor development, emphasizing the need for continued follow-up to comprehend the long-term effects of prenatal opioid exposure.
