Prenatal THC Exposure Impairs Offspring Lung Development

Prenatal exposure to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in rhesus macaques led to significantly reduced lung function in offspring, including decreased forced residual capacity (FRC) and lower lung volume, diffusion capacity, and oxygen availability. MRI analysis revealed impaired fetal lung perfusion. Molecular analysis identified altered epigenetic regulation at genes related to lung development, including immune signaling activation. These findings suggest prenatal THC exposure negatively impacts offspring lung health and development.
