Prenatal ultrasound screening and congenital anomalies at birth by region: Pattern and distribution in Latvia

A study comparing ultrasound scan frequencies and congenital malformations in urban and rural areas revealed that 3% of live-born infants had congenital malformations. Rates were 2% higher in urban Riga compared to rural regions. Mothers with affected infants had significantly higher odds of abnormal ultrasound findings and invasive diagnostic tests. Riga had a median of 3 ultrasound scans, while rural regions had 4. Top congenital anomalies included musculoskeletal deformations and circulatory/genital malformations. The study emphasizes a link between anomaly rates and prenatal examination frequency.
