The global number of opiate users has doubled in the last decade, with 58% diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD), according to a study. Risk factors for OUD include early opiate use and underprivileged living conditions. Those with OUD were twice as likely to experience psychological distress. Multivariate regression revealed that opiate dose and oral use were independently linked to OUD, with a ten-gram per week increase tripling the odds. The findings underscore the significant impact of chronic opiate use on clinical disorders and emphasize the heightened burden on high-risk populations.
