Prevalence and risk of stillbirth according to biologic vulnerability phenotypes in the municipality of São Paulo, Brazil

A study conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, from 2017 to 2019 aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk of stillbirths based on biologic vulnerability phenotypes among pregnant women. The study included 442,782 pregnancies, with 0.5% resulting in stillbirths. Notably, 85% of stillbirths displayed at least one vulnerability factor, compared to 21% of live births. Fetuses with all three vulnerability markers (small for gestational age, low birth weight, and preterm) had the highest risk of stillbirth. These findings emphasize the importance of identifying biologically vulnerable circumstances to reduce preventable stillbirths.
