Prevalence of age-related macular degeneration in Iran and its projections through 2050

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss, is anticipated to rise significantly among Iran's ageing population. A comprehensive study analyzing 17 research papers with 16,120 participants reveals a 10.8% prevalence of AMD in Iranian males and 9.8% in females. Notably, AMD rates spike to 32.3% in those aged 80 and above. The study underscores the need for preventive measures, considering an annual increase of 3.66% in AMD cases, projecting 5.5 million cases in Iran by 2050.
